Inside of a dog it's too dark to read"Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.comBlogger43125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-32767182613719144792012-08-30T09:26:00.004-07:002012-08-30T09:26:53.235-07:00On WritingMy uncle is Stephen King. THE Stephen King, you ask? Of course! THE Stephen King who writes books? Oh. No, not that one. The one who lives in Oregon.

This book by the author Stephen King (not my uncle, as clarified before) gets a 5 out of 5. Beautifully, truthfully written. And thats the point, isn't it? To write our truth as vividly as possible so people get a glipse into a life? You can write beautifully about a terrible story, and I realized that is what King does in his novels. This memoir gave me a picture of that.

It made me self conscious for a few minutes-- am I a bad writer? A compement one? Do I make Shakespeare look like a chapter book or Danielle Steel look like a genius? Honestly, I don't know yet. And it doesn't matter, because I'm not there yet. These posts are SFDs (Shitty First Drafts, thank you Anne Lamott) and what King would call "writing with the door closed". My door is both physically and metaphorically open, because it gets damn hot with it closed, and because people can read my first drafts, but I'm cool with it. Eventually I'll edit and see what we come up with, but for now, enjoy the spelling errors and occasional bad grammar.

Is it ok to have a crush on Stephen King? I'm realizing that every book I fall in love with, I end up falling in love with the author too. I don't know if I'm ready for Carrie or The Shining, but I do want to read some of his fiction. Any suggestions?
You know, while I am glad I have read this books, I'm not proud to include all of them in my challenge. Yes, they are quality fiction by a well known author, but they are, well... short.

I guess I feel like a terrible person for reading a novella when I should be reading literature or longer memoirs, but enough of that.

This is a book from the perspective of Jonathan, Saul's son and David's best friend. It was pretty interesting to see things from his perspective-- I guess I hadn't really thought about him being as caught in the middle of a battle that wasn't his (between his father and David).

Well, expect a longer, more vivacious book with a ravishing review tomorrow my dear readers.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-41567071169061749922012-08-19T21:12:00.001-07:002012-08-19T21:13:27.508-07:00PninAs I was reading Pnin today I realized how greatly under read I am in Russian literature. I think the extent of my exposure is this novel, a sci-fi book based in a fantasy world with Russian tendencies (The Winds of Khalakova- which is also worth a read) and the tiny mice in the children's movie Babe who peep "Crime and Punishment teeheeeheee" at the beginning of one of the movie's "chapters".

Does this make me a horrible person? Probably. Or at least a vastly undercultured bibliophile. Oh well. Most of Tolstoy's and Dostoevsky's work is too long for this year.

But Pnin fit the bill. It was a captivating, succinct, endearing and bittersweet. At first glance, I felt a patronizing pity for Pnin, but as I got to know him through the book and watched his character develop I was very endeared to him, and while he had his faults, was a full character, and indeed a worthy protagonist.

So if you have been interested in reading some Russian lit but wake up with night sweats after nightmares about reading the tome of War and Peace, give this a go!
As I have been asking people for recommendations a fair amount of people of the female persuasion told me that they mostly read cook books, so I decided to give it a go.

Unless you're reading a biography of Colin Firth, its hard to find non-fiction that makes you salivate. But just reading through the ingredients and the narrative about the final creations almost made me jump on a bus to the nearest store, purchase all the needed ingredients and release my inner Julia Childs.

Even though I did not, in fact, stuff my face with bento goodness, I am really excited to experiment more with Asian cuisine (my wonderful neighbor Hee Sook offered to help) and make cute lunches for the hubs. And for those of you who have not experienced bento boxes, the actually definition of one is "a meal packed in a box". So even if you just shove an apple and a spam sandwich into your child's lunch box, you are, in fact, a bento maker.

And now, just for fun- pictures of Bento boxes!

Ok, today's book is kind of a joke. But at least it's an ENTIRE book! It's been a long week at work, so my level of reading comprehension (and speed) diminishes drastically. Hence, Einstein the lazy kitty and lazy, lazy Melody.

But it did get me thinking about children's books and how influential they are in helping children comprehend big ideas like love, bed time, first days of school, even loss. There are books out there for everything!

One day a few years ago I was playing with my nephew and all we had to play with was an apple and and a drawing of a snail, and Scary Apple was created. My first idea for a title is "Scary Apple and the Snails' Potty Party" which is how Scary Apple (who is not so scary at all, in fact) runs into a bunch of snails who are having a party at a potty (potty training) and since Scary Apple has never been to a potty party before, the snails show him how to P-A-R-T-Y!!! Gertrude is the princess of the snails and occasionally slips into spoonerisms when she gets excited.

What ideas do you have for childrens' books? What was your favorite growing up?Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-55482836862018437722012-08-16T01:24:00.001-07:002012-08-16T01:24:14.091-07:00The WarriorToday has been a long, full day. After work and dinner, my poor lonely house-husband wanted to get out and do something fun, so I agreed to go watch a movie at 10pm. I imbibed superfluous amounts of Coke so I would stay awake, and I think I'm still feeling it now. We watched Men in Black 3- which was surprisingly good! But really, even if it was bad I would have loved it-- I have a secret crush on Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords, who plays Boris the Animal, the villain in the movie. I guess my crush isn't a secret anymore, since I've just told the whole internets. (I think Jared secretly has a man crush on him too.)

But about my book! I read The Warrior by Francine Rivers, the second in the Sons of Encouragement Series. (Side note: I first typed "Spoons of Encouragement". I feel like that book would have gone in a slightly different direction than Sons of Encouragement). It was a book from the point of view of Caleb during the Old Testament exodus, leading up to the capture of Canaan, the promised land. Even though all of River's books are fiction, this one was less believable than others. Don't get me wrong, Caleb is a stud, but the background my picture of him. But only 195 tiny pages, so its worth reading to experience the author's perspective of the story.

Since I've had so much Coke, I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to come up with a storyline for the "Spoons of Encouragement" series. No luck yet. I think there's a reason I typically go to bed by 11.

Another thing that I typically do is take off my pants when I'm tired.
Goodnight.

I'm tired.
Before I talk about this books specifically, just a general shout out to Francine- her books are great. She paints biblical characters as people! Which, you know, is what they are! So often I read the bible and just read the stories as vague stories, not stopping to think about the people in the stories: their thoughts, feelings, and the fact that they were HUMAN and SINNERS! Just because they were in the bible doesn't mean that they were perfect, it just means God chose to use them.

While The Priest wasn't my favorite book by Francine Rivers, it gives us insight into the world and mind of Aaron- the elder brother of Moses. How would you feel if your younger brother was chosen by God for something great? That he lived in a palace while you were a slave? While Aaron's attitude was kinda whiny at times, it was a not often portrayed view point and therefore very enjoyable.

On a side note about today: if you are going to go to Starbucks to blog, be prepared to wait for a table to open up. And if you decide you don't want to wait, bring your computer cord so that you can plug in your dead computer. And if you don't bring your cord, be sure that you have a library account. And if you don't have a library account, be sure that you try to get one on a day that the library computer systems are working. That being said, I'm back at home blogging in my office. On a more positive note- my husband and I bought curtains for our living room today!
It's been over two months since I've blogged (yikes) which means that I've read over 80 books, and that sadly, you have not been able to hear anything about them. So hopefully I'll be able to do a quick review of the last two months and we can get up to speed :)

Firstly, the reason I haven't been blogging is because we moved! We packed all of our belongings into a 6x7x8 storage cube (my husband is a master packer) and shipped off to California! We love it here. Such a diverse environment, gracious neighbors and friends and PALM TREES OUT OUR WINDOW!!!

Here are a few highlights of the past two months (in no particular order)

1. Fitting everything we own into a 6x7x8 ft storage cube. Seriously, hubs has mad skills.

2. Walking around our new town. We LOVE PASADENA! The city hall, beautiful palm trees, and exploring houses used in movies.
So when Chris Hemsworth first walked in to the coffee shop that my husband and I were at in Santa Monica I turned and thought "that is a tiny baby" and after a second glance I realized that no, the baby was normal sized, but THOR was holding her! Such a cute family. And i felt that we were finally initiated into SoCal- isn't celeb sighting what its all about? :)

4. My new job! I was able to track down a job within two weeks of us moving here, which is very helpful financially. It's similar to what I was doing before (working in Residential Life at a college), but this time with grad students and more office based. But still great fun! I get to plan a retreat, work with like minded folks, and enjoy free breakfast every Friday.

5. Fresh produce. THE. BEST. EVER. Seriously- I keep posting pictures on Instagram of all my my great finds, and I'm sure my followers just *love* the #foodpics. Oh look! I found one :) All of this for $5.50! I'm in heaven. Strangely though, no starfruit! My husband is saddened- its his favorite fruit!

6. Entering sweepstakes! I've been a sweepstakes entering machine for the past 3 weeks- and so far have won 4 books (a great win considering I'm reading a book a day) and $15 worth of laundry detergent. Start small, win big! I'm currently hoping for a Soda Stream... those things will change your life!

7. Okay, this isn't a highlight, but its the only culture shock that we've really experienced so far: we cannot find kings sized sheets anywhere! And believe me, we've looked. California King is everywhere, which, considering our location makes sense, but its still strange that we can't find them anywhere! Any tips, Cali residents?

8. Coffee art. And lavender breve lattes. swoon.

9. New friends. From playing games to having free haircut days to having people over, we have loved our new community.

10. And of course... the books I've read! I have enjoyed (most) every book, and am still enjoying this challenge!

It's definitely an adjustment not having a car (my husband and I sold our car before we moved out to SoCal), but it is very freeing not having to pay attention to traffic. However, you still need to pay attention to where your stop is.

Waiting on a bus is never fun, but when you have a book, it makes the wait much more bearable. This book definitely improved my attitude-- it was a gem of a find from an author I hadn't heard of before-- but the name and the cover drew me in. Plus, I needed me some YA fiction.

There are a few other books with the same title, but this stands apart in theme. Without spoiling the book, there is an interesting amount of chaos magic, which is pretty fascinating. The protagonist is a teen-aged girl who blossoms through the conflict into this coming of age fantasy novel.

It was a very quick read, and although there wasn't much depth in the story, the characters were pretty well formed.

Give it a whirl!Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-75117009341743197652012-08-11T22:06:00.000-07:002012-08-14T22:07:15.521-07:00Maus I and III'm not typically one to read graphic novels, but I really wanted to branch out into different genres during this challenge and I had only heard good things about Maus so I decided to try them out, and I am very glad I did. There is so much depth to these books and the graphics only add to the story. I think so often I forget that we as humans are visual beings, and think that the only way to glean "serious" knowledge from a book is by reading words, and not by absorbing image. I can be pretty "judgy" sometimes, and I definitely pay for it by not experiencing all that I could.

I urge you to read this book. Not only is the metaphor phenomenal, but its a true story about an Auschwitz survivor and his tumultuous relationship with his son (who is the author). Here's a glimpse of what it's like:
The present day story was very believable, but almost too believable to enjoy the included "flashbacks" or the dual time of the book.

As a whole, some good relational content (between Blythe and her ex husband, and then Blythe and Lucas, and the strained relationship between Lucas and his son) and enjoyable "mystery".

Worth a go. But not worth your only three hours of free time in a hectic day. More like a "what do I do with all this free time" on a long plane ride or relaxing vacation.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-16410108453627716972012-06-06T22:11:00.000-07:002012-08-13T22:15:49.842-07:00At Home in MitfordThis book reminds me of my grandpa. I've heard about the series for years, but until I found the first book on sale for 50 cents at a used book store, I had not read any of it, and after I was done with the book, I was sad it took me so long!

This book is quaint and makes me want to garden and cook feasts every day. City slickers, country livin' can really be like this. And if you're from the country and find yourself trapped in a city, this idyllic book will transport you into the most endearing little town.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-12796172899268606002012-06-05T22:14:00.000-07:002012-08-13T22:15:32.772-07:00The Uncommon ReaderThis book is about the Queen of England, her corgis and her love of reading, so what could be better? Well, unfortunately, a lot of things. While enjoyable, it was hard to feel a part of the story, and it was occasionally hard to believe what was going on.

But still, worth a read! (Isn't every book?) However, if you do read it, try not to pack it into your belongings and take it across country and accrue tens of dollars of late fees to your old library. Never a good idea.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-83015683278223846832012-06-04T07:12:00.001-07:002012-06-04T07:12:44.766-07:00Bossy PantsI think I read this book too soon after Seriously... I'm Kidding. Tina Fey writes a good autobiography, and its actually the story of her life... but I wanted it to be funnier. Granted, Ellen's book is not her autobiography, so she can just choose to write about funny things.

Tina Fey is pretty darn inspiring. She stuck with her guns and did what she wanted to do, and it really good and it.

The "rules of improv" are really facinating! Seriously, if you follow these you will be an awesome actor. ok, maybe not. But you'll be better. And read this article! It talks about the connection between improv (show business) and your career.

Final word: Read this book.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-12665652509831685272012-06-02T11:15:00.002-07:002012-06-02T11:15:58.012-07:00Since Nobody is Perfect... How Good is Good Enough?I have been sick this week. It started out just as a man voice on Tuesday, followed by a cough, followed by hacking up copious amount of green (GREEN!!!) phlegm at 530 am and not being able to go back to sleep. But I don't feel like reading when I'm sick, I just want to curl up in a little ball with someone with cold hands touching my eyeballs. Sickness brings out the needyness in me.

So, this book is very short. But very good! It's about heaven and what our culture thinks about getting into heaven, and was written pre-Love Wins. Andy Stanley is a great pastor and speaker. You should listen to some podcasts by him.

That being said, I'm still sick and I dreamed I ate gillyweed so that I could hide under water while people were trying to kill me, so I'm going to be done with the post.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-9780841184150034372012-06-02T11:08:00.000-07:002012-06-02T11:08:22.406-07:00Farmer BoyMy family was known for having the best Halloween parties. We had pinatas, did cake walks, had prizes for best costume, and the list goes on. I was quite an imaginative child when it came to my Halloween costumes: The Three Tenors (I was Pavarotti), an envelope (addressed to my favorite teacher), and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Needless to say, I didn't usually win best costume because nobody really knew what I was.

Reading this book (by Laura Ingalls Wilder) took me back to the time when I was obsessed with Laura Ingalls Wilder. Little House on the Prairie was fun, wholesome, and they always ate good food. Oh. My. Goodness. Do NOT read this book when you are hungry. They describe each dinner and feast in perfect detail. While they are feasting on honeyed ham, apples 'n onions, homemade bread and canned green beans from mama's garden, I start thinking about the leftovers I had for lunch and am ashamed. I have an oven! A grocery store across the street! Electricity! And I never make feasts like that. This week, I will cook at least one (or two things from scratch).

But this is a wonderful book in a great series. Tell your kids to read it. Read it yourself. It will make you want to cook and buy cows.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-6889797744578116372012-06-01T03:16:00.001-07:002012-06-01T03:16:13.728-07:00Much Ado About NothingHow is this not in schools's required reading? This is one of Shakespeare's better known comedies, but I think it should be up there with the tragedies. The characters are fun, and I love the typical play on words with the names (Hero).

This is a story about two sets of couples, one who love each other but banter with the best of them (comedies today that think they came up with loving banter need to go back and read this play) and another who get tricked out of getting married.

It was kind of hard to process in a day, not because of the content, but because the names were abbreviated so I would sometimes get confused about who was saying what.

But one of the last lines.... oh my word so good!

Benedick says to Beatrice (after she goes on for a bit about something) "Peace! I will stop your mouth!" and he kisses her.

Way better than "shut up so I can kiss you". Good job Bill.
He played it in high school, almost played it in college, and will jump at the chance to join a summer softball league. I, on the other hand, know that there are 9 innings, and three strikes means you are out.

But since we are moving and he LOVES the Cubs, we decided to go to a Memorial Day game with some friends. We took the train to Chicago and then caught the red line up to the stadium. We were at the front of the line for the bleachers and got amazing seats.... front row in the bleachers! Wow.

Needless to say, I did not read at the game. But look at this hypothetical reading picture! Beautiful.

I read my book on the train, Specials by Scott Westerfeld. It's the third book in the Uglies series (I wrote about the second, Pretties, previously) and it was ok. I love the concept and I think they could make cool movies, but the slang still really gets to me, and Tally's character wasn't as strong as it was in the other two books.

But I will read the fourth in a month or so (trying to space out the series so that you don't get bored)Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-26500815601421000212012-05-27T19:10:00.001-07:002012-05-27T19:14:10.996-07:00Financial PeaceMy husband and I are on a budget, and he took a class that used much of Dave Ramsey's material, so I wanted to read it for myself. Conclusion: If you're ready to buy into it, read the chapter entitled Baby Steps that is five pages long and you'll be good to go. Actually, you don't even have to do that because I'm attaching a handy-dandy pdf of all seven of them.

That being said, it is a very thorough and helpful program. I think it's better to do with people though-- as a program, and not just reading a book by yourself. If its a complete lifestyle overhaul, you'll want (and need!) some support.

Yay! I finished the book! Look how happy (and sunburnt) I am! A long day at Lake Michigan will do that to you. Note about Lake Michigan lifeguards: they do not like it if you attempt to swim to the "no wake" buoys. You will get reprimanded. (It felt amazing! I felt so rebellious!)Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-4532228234140802092012-05-27T19:03:00.002-07:002012-05-27T19:03:58.682-07:00Ender's GameMy darling sister-in-law Havilah suggested this book, and I am super glad I read it, and when I looked online at IMDb and saw they were going to make a move of it, I almost cried with happiness! Plus, HARRISON FORD IS IN IT!!!!!

It's perfect for him-- a war with aliens on another planet? Potentially typecasting, but thats ok.

The book is about a genius little boy Andrew (who goes by Ender) and how he progresses through different schools very quickly, with the hope that he will be the next great commander. A few twists and turns, interesting relationship with his brother (who always threatens to kill him and his sister?) but really good.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-40858905303488292992012-05-27T19:00:00.000-07:002012-05-27T19:00:01.814-07:00Dangerous WonderAs I've been doing this challenge I've been trying to be sure that I'm doing it for a reason better than "wow, that would be cool if people read my blog and thought I was cool and then I wrote a book and made a million dollars". I want it to be a connecting point, be a help to people who are looking for books to read, encourage people to be intentional in their schedules, and using the books and the emotions that they reach to help me be a more authentic person and be able to articulate the connection in my blog.

Dangerous Wonder by Mike Yaconelli helps me get there. I had started reading it in 2007 on a plane ride to Alaska, but then never picked it up again. I have no idea why... I just, stopped.

I'm glad I finished it. It's pretty simple stuff, just live your life in childlike wonder, and you'll be good to go! But it's alot harded to do. To cut out the busyness, to find things that make you feel alive. But it's worth it.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-11991303677620610182012-05-26T07:45:00.000-07:002012-05-26T07:45:28.098-07:00The Tiger's WifeWhen I tell people that I am reading a book a day for a year, their second reaction , after "is that even possible?", is typically "you won't have time for anything else!" or "you'll have your head in a book the entire year!" and while yes, this is a lot of reading, it's really only 1-3 hours a day. I get frustrated with people who think it isn't possible, because tons of people watch a movie or TV for two hours a day, and no one tells them "wow thats really hard to do" because well, its not hard to do. It's very easy to sit it front of a TV or on Facebook for hours, and then look up later and see how much time has passed.

The hardest part about this challenge was making the initial commitment to read a book a day for a year, and actually starting it. It means I have to be intentional about when I wake up (which I haven't been that great at) and finding books to read (I go to the library once a week and pick up 5-6 books). While I would like to be even more intentional about what I read, like "oh today is International Jazz Day ? I'll read Blue like Jazz!" (which I can't do, because I've already read it. and love it. Donald Miller, you coy, clever man)

But in the mean time, I try to alternate each day between fiction and non-fiction, and can choose whatever genre I want. I don't have all 365 books chosen because new books will be written and friends may recommend books I haven't heard of so I want to leave room for those changes. And yes, its added reading, but I am being intentional about what I read, and making sure that life doesn't pass me by while my head is stuck in a book.

This book was another well chosen birthday present from the hubs. What made it even better was that I read it on the train to and from Chicago to meet up with my friend Andrea from highschool. We had a blast! Saw the bean, went on the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier, walked the Mag Mile, went to the Cheesecake Factory, put our hands inside an imprint of Michael Jordan's, and went to a ridiculous amount of souvenir stores. Our feet were yelling at us by the end of the day, but it was worth it.

Tea Obreht is an amazing author- she should win awards for this book. I am extremely jealous of her-- not only does she have a cute pixie face, but this book was published when she was 25. But I will look past my jealousy and try to give an unbiased opinion (unbiased opinion? that's sort of an oxymoron).

This book was set in a non-descript Balkan country which I enjoyed. Since I've spent some time in Albania, I pictured it in Albania. Rakija was raki, and burek was byrek. The symbolism of the tiger reminded me of The Life of Pi, and the relationship with her grandfather was heartbreakingly beautiful.
She leaves much unsaid, but the silences and pauses tell us more than we need to know.
It conjures up an amazing metal image, which as you read the book, is the point.

Joshua Foer (who is also the younger brother of Jonathan Safran Foer, one of my favorite authors) finds himself at the USA Mental Athletes championship a year after he started researching memory.

It's a pretty meaty read, but interesting as well. I think I wanted to hear more humorous vignettes of his story while preparing, but all in all, a good book.

I think I am going to start to practice the Major system.
(This post is short because I went kayaking and got lost in the woods in flip flops for 2 1/2 hours with my friend Lindsey)Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-3375897325338224292012-05-23T07:34:00.002-07:002012-05-23T07:34:26.225-07:00Lone WolfJodi Picoult is a book writing beast! Seriously, in the time I have written this sentence she probably popped out a well researched chapter. I really admire her-- she takes her writing (and her readers!) seriously. Out of all of the authors that I have emailed to ask for book suggestions, she was the first to reply, and probably the one that writes the most.

Lone Wolf is really interesting. The first time I had read anything about wolves was in Twilight, and I don't think Twilight's description has much integrity in the real world. The Wolves of Mercy Falls is a good series that mixes werewolves with real info about pack mentality etc, but I think Lone Wolf is much more researched. Probably because you can't actually research werewolves, now that I think of it.

I've enjoyed others of Picoult's book more, but I really admire this book, and the amount of research that she does. Seriously, there is so much info on wolves, I feel like I could go live with them in the wild now.

I would have loved more character development in Cara Warren, and slight hints (even misleading hints) until we find out what actually happened to her dad.

Anyway, if you like Jodi Picoult, you will like it, but you probably won't cry in it.Melody Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755564674397640833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484127494206158333.post-13982116727372933072012-05-22T09:02:00.001-07:002012-05-22T09:02:27.197-07:00YESI love Ann Kiemel. (now Ann Kiemel Anderson)

Her writing is free and reminds of of e e cummings, who enjoyed experimenting with punctuation and syntax. I wouldn't want to read such "free punctuation" every day, but its liberating in small doses.

This book is about Ann saying YES to obedience, sacrifice, loneliness, all for the glory of the Cross.

YES
to tomorrow.
fresh dreams.
higher mountains.
greater impossibilities.
wider sunrises.
stouter courage.
braver risks.
